HEATX-3 How to Use: Your First Week with the HEATX-3

You open the box, the manual is a folded card with six pictures on it, and now you have a device that costs real money. Let me save you the first evening. This is what to do, in order, plus what the buttons actually do when your thumb is fumbling for them. If you are coming from an IQOS, a Glo or a Pulze, I will flag where the muscle memory trips you up.

Unboxing and the first charge

The box holds the unit, a Type-C cable and a short manual. No holder, no cleaning brush, which is worth knowing because you will want a brush eventually. Charge it first, and fully. A full charge takes about 2 hours on 5V / 2A over USB Type-C. Do not judge the device on a 10-minute top-up while making coffee. The 3200 mAh cell needs real time, and the first charge is when it settles into its working range. That is longer than the IQOS ILUMA's roughly 90 minutes, the direct cost of a much larger battery in a bigger body. Charge it overnight and it stops being a factor. The same 3200 mAh gives about 30 heating cycles per charge, so one charge should carry you most of a week. Colours are black, purple, green and silver. All matte, and a matte body does not hold fingerprints.

Choosing your first mode

The HEATX-3 has 4 temperature modes and you cycle them with a quick double press: SOFT, MILD, NORMAL, BOOST. Start on SOFT or MILD for your first couple of sticks. You do not yet know how this device hits you personally, and the lighter end of the range is the polite place to find out. A session runs 320 seconds, roughly 5 and a half minutes, and 320 seconds at BOOST can feel much longer than that. NORMAL is the everyday setting. If you take one thing from this guide, take that: once you are past week one, you will mostly live in NORMAL. BOOST is for a stronger, more concentrated hit, fast. Past about 30 seconds it is stronger than I personally want, which is why I basically never touch it. It is also the mode most likely to put a first-timer off the device entirely. For context on how others handle this: the glo Pro from British American Tobacco runs a single button with vibration feedback and a BOOST preheat of 10 seconds versus 20 in standard mode. The Pulze 3.0 from Imperial Brands gives you only Intense and Mild, and runs a 5-minute session with no fixed puff-count cap. For a beginner, four is plenty.

What each button does

There is one button. That is the whole interface, and it is worth learning in the first ten minutes.

  • Single press shows you the battery, the current temperature mode, and your total stick count
  • Quick double press cycles through SOFT, MILD, NORMAL, BOOST
  • Quick triple press turns it on or off
  • Insert a stick and it starts heating automatically, no button needed
  • Long press stops heating at any point
  • Eight quick presses in a row resets the stick counter to zero

The screen shows three things: battery level, puff count, and the mode you are in. Small screen, not a touchscreen, and it switches off when you are not using it, which helps battery life. Auto-start is the part I would call out loud. Push the stick in, it heats. You do not fumble for a button in a car, in a lift, or with a coffee in your other hand. The long press matters just as much: if you are driving, or a colleague walks over, you can stop it in one motion.

Your first three sessions

Session one: charge to full, pick a mode, insert a stick, let it run. Do not chain a second stick straight away, and do not finish a session you clearly do not want. The goal is not a number, it is finding out what the device feels like to you. Session two: try a different mode, one step up from last time if SOFT felt thin. Keep notes on your phone: which mode, roughly how much you used, how it felt. Session three: this is where the habit either forms or it does not. Still on the first two modes? Fine. Many people sit on MILD for months. One thing to know up front: the HEATX-3 has no app and no Bluetooth. You will not get session data pushed to your phone, and there are no firmware updates, so the device you buy is the final version. If you like tracking usage on a screen, the IQOS ILUMA is the opposite choice, with an app, Bluetooth, firmware updates, and a slide-adjustable temperature control finer-grained than four named modes.

Cleaning after a week

Tobacco residue is sticky, and it builds up in the holder and around the heating chamber. Open the lid after every couple of sessions and check. A dry cotton swab or a soft brush gets most of it. Do not scrape the heating plate with metal, and do not run water into the device. Two more things. Do not leave it sitting at 100% charge for weeks, and if you are not using it for a while, charge it to about half and put it in a drawer. And keep grit out of the Type-C port, the most failure-prone part of a device like this.

When the battery drops below 20%

Single press and the screen gives you a battery reading, so check it before you leave the house instead of halfway through a stick. Below 20% the heat becomes less consistent and a session can end early. That is your cue to charge, not to keep pushing. A 2 hour charge restores the full 30-cycle range. I have also seen people top up a lithium device every night for a month. Charge it when it needs it, unplug it when it is done.

Common mistakes I have seen people make

The big one is starting on BOOST because it sounds powerful. It is the most intense setting the device has and the fastest way to convince yourself you do not like HNB. The second is not reading the screen. If you single press and see the mode, you know what the device is doing. Most early confusion comes from not knowing which mode was still selected from two sessions ago. The third is leaving the stick in after the session ends. Pull it out, and dispose of it properly. The fourth is expecting the slim fit of a smaller device. The HEATX-3 is 35 × 22 × 98 mm and 100 g, and in a slim suit trouser pocket that is more than you would like. The Pulze 3.0 is about 57 g, the Ploom TECH+ is around 37 g though it uses capsules rather than sticks, and the lil Solid 2.0 from KT&G is 880 mAh with ceramic heat conduction and takes about 2 sticks at a time.

When to skip this device

Skip it if you want app data and Bluetooth, since there is neither. Skip it if you need a device that disappears into a slim pocket. Skip it if you want capsule convenience, because the Ploom TECH+ does that on 480 mAh with a 60-minute charge. Skip it if a 320-second hard stop per stick is wrong for you, since the Pulze 3.0 runs 5 minutes with no fixed puff limit. Buy it if you want the longest battery life in this category, 4 modes instead of 2, and a device that needs no attention from a phone.

Health, safety and legal notes

Heated tobacco is not harmless. Avoiding combustion reduces exposure to a number of the toxicants in cigarette smoke, but HEATX-3 products still deliver nicotine, and nicotine is addictive. Nothing in this guide is medical advice. If you do not already use tobacco or nicotine, there is no reason to start. Check the age limits, taxes and rules where you live, buy only from licensed sellers, and treat this as a reduced-harm nicotine product rather than a safe one.
