HEATX GEN2.0 vs Ploom TECH+: Capsules and Sticks Are Not the Same Purchase

HEATX Lab2026-10-236 min read

There is a question I get more often than any other from people who are new to heated tobacco, and it has nothing technical in it. They ask whether the capsule devices or the stick devices are better, and they ask it as if there is a correct answer.

There is not a correct answer. There are two different products that solve the same problem in ways that suit different people, and the mistake is treating them as rivals on a single scoreboard.

The Ploom TECH+ is a good device. It is light, it charges in about an hour, and it works. If it fits your life, buy it. But before you compare specs, you have to understand that you are not comparing a stick device with a stick device, and that changes what every number means.

GEN2.0 figures are from our specification sheet. Ploom and Japan Tobacco figures are from their published specifications.

The difference that comes before any spec sheet

Ploom is a capsule system. The TECH+ takes a small tobacco capsule, places it in a heating tube, and heats the capsule. There is no stick, no tobacco leaf in a tube, no insert. When the session is over the capsule is spent and you replace it with another.

The GEN2.0 is a stick system. It takes a full-length heated tobacco stick in the ILUMA or TEREA format, heats it with a 360 degree circumferential element, and the stick is what you hold.

That single distinction explains most of what follows. Capsules are smaller and hold less tobacco. Sticks are longer, hold more, and are the format the rest of the category has standardised on. A capsule device is not a cheaper stick device, it is a different object that happens to do the same job.

The weight column is where the Ploom wins so convincingly that it deserves a moment. Thirty-seven grams against sixty-nine. The Ploom TECH+ is genuinely one of the lightest heated tobacco devices sold anywhere, and for anyone who has carried a heavier device all day, that is not a rounding error.

The battery column is the one I want to slow down on, because it looks like a mismatch and it is not quite.

Six hundred and ten milliamp hours, or four hundred and eighty, sounds like a fraction of 1800. But the Ploom's session is a capsule, and a capsule holds considerably less tobacco than a stick. Roughly twenty capsules per charge against eighteen sticks is not the number it looks like at first glance. The Ploom charges faster because it is doing less per charge.

Neither of those numbers tells you the full story though, and I would be doing you a disservice if I stopped there. What I cannot tell you from published figures is the cost per session in your market, because capsule pricing and stick pricing move differently and neither is universal. Before you decide on battery capacity, work out what one session actually costs you in each format.

Why the second pass changes the arithmetic

This is the part the capsule format cannot do, and it is worth understanding because it is not a small difference.

The GEN2.0 gives you 16 puffs on the first pass through a stick and 13 on the second. Twenty-nine in total, from the one stick you bought. The reason it works is the 360 degree circumferential element: because it wraps around the outside of the stick and heats inward, a stick you have already used can go straight back in without any rotation or re-seating. You insert it and it starts.

With a capsule, the entire capsule is the heating unit for that session. When the session ends, the used capsule has given what it gives and there is no second pass available. Your choice is a fresh capsule every time.

I am not going to tell you which is better value, because the honest answer depends on what a stick and a capsule cost where you live and how much tobacco each one actually delivers. What I will say is that with a stick format you have the option of finishing what you started, and with a capsule format you do not. Having the option is worth something.

The five minute session advantage belongs to Ploom

Let me give credit where it is due, because there is a real one here.

The Ploom TECH+ runs a five minute session. The GEN2.0 runs 240 seconds, which is four minutes. Ploom also charges in about 60 minutes against the GEN2.0's 90, and at 37 grams it is the device you forget you are carrying.

If your priority is the smallest possible object that delivers a standard session and recharges in the time it takes to have a coffee, the Ploom is very hard to argue with. It is a well-executed capsule system and 37 grams is remarkable.

The GEN2.0's screen is worth a mention as well, since the Ploom's display situation is not published. Ours shows battery percentage, a live puff count that splits into the 16 and 13 segments so you can see which pass you are on, and a preheat indicator. The rotating ripple icon runs during heating, the Type-C symbol shows while charging, a warning icon appears for abnormal states such as over-temperature protection, and you get a reminder below 20% battery.

What I would not buy

If you want the lightest device possible and a five minute session with a fast charge, the Ploom TECH+ is the better object and I would not try to talk you out of it.

If you do not want to be locked into one capsule supply chain, the Ploom is a closed ecosystem. Ploom capsules come from Ploom, in Ploom formats, and the refill economics are the manufacturer's to set. The GEN2.0 takes ILUMA and TEREA format sticks, which is the format used across most of the category, so you are not tied to a single brand's refills.

If you already smoke and are switching rather than starting, the Ploom route means learning a completely new consumable format on day one, on top of learning the device. That is a lot of new variables at once.

And the GEN2.0 is the heavier device. Sixty-nine grams against thirty-seven is the gap I cannot argue away, and I would rather say it here than have you feel it in your pocket.

There is one more thing. The GEN2.0 does not heat capsules. If someone tells you it is a Ploom-compatible device, they have not read the spec sheet.

Which one to buy

Buy the Ploom TECH+ if weight is your first consideration, if a five minute session suits you better than four, and if you are comfortable with capsules as a format. You will like the device. It is 37 grams and it works.

Buy the GEN2.0 if you want the stick format the wider category uses, if you want 29 puffs out of a single stick rather than one session per consumable, if you want to see your puff count and your remaining pass on a display, and if you would rather not depend on one company's refill schedule. Specifications and photos are on chillmistvape.com.

Whichever you pick, do not buy it because one of these tables has a bigger number in it. The two products do not compete on the same axis, and the number that should decide it is what one session costs you in the format you will actually be buying.

Health, law and where to buy

Heated tobacco is not harmless. Avoiding combustion reduces exposure to a number of the toxicants in cigarette smoke, but nicotine is still delivered and nicotine is addictive. Nothing here is medical advice and nothing in this article claims that either device is safe.

If you do not already use tobacco or nicotine, there is no reason to start. Age limits and tax rules differ by country and change often, so check where you live. Buy from licensed sellers only. The Ploom and Japan Tobacco figures here come from the manufacturer's published specifications; the GEN2.0 figures come from our own specification sheet. Compare the numbers, then decide which device fits how you actually use a heated tobacco device.
