HEATX vs IQOS vs Ploom vs Glo: An Honest Comparison

The most common request in a heat-not-burn conversation is a direct comparison, and the most useful one is against the device the customer already knows. This article puts the HEATX range alongside the three platforms that dominate the category — IQOS, Ploom and Glo — on the specifications that decide daily use and annual cost rather than brand prestige.

Two of the comparisons come up constantly: HEATX versus IQOS, and HEATX versus Ploom. The third, Glo, is often overlooked and deserves a proper look.

HEATX Versus IQOS: The Head-to-Head

The IQOS ILUMA is the category's benchmark and deserves to be. It removed the blade with induction heating, it has the deepest flavour catalogue in the world, and the "i" generation added a touchscreen, FlexPuff and Pause Mode.

Where the two diverge is three lines in the table above.

Sessions per stick. The ILUMA's induction element heats from a single internal point, and the firmware consumes the stick in one pass. FlexPuff's extra puffs extend that same session; they do not create a second one. HEATX's circumferential chamber heats the tobacco evenly around its full outer surface, so usable tobacco remains after the first session and a second session is genuinely available. For two packs a week, that is 2,080 sticks a year versus roughly 1,040 — a difference no feature on a flagship comes close to matching.

Form factor. The ILUMA splits into a holder and a charging case. That design is elegant on a desk and awkward in a pocket: two objects to carry and one to remember. HEATX models are single-piece, from the 64 g GEN 5.0 to the 21.5 × 30 × 105 mm GEN 6.0.

Temperature control. The ILUMA's profile is fixed in firmware, which guarantees consistency and removes flexibility. The HEATX GEN2.0 offers four selectable modes — SOFT, MILD, NORMAL and BOOST — cycled with a double press, and the GEN 6.0 offers two temperature curves.

Where IQOS still wins clearly: flavour breadth, retail and service footprint, brand trust, and the polish of the touchscreen experience. Those are not small things, and for many buyers they are decisive.

HEATX Versus Ploom: Geometry Versus Simplicity

Ploom X is the cleanest chamber design in the category and the strongest competitor in its home market. Its heating element never touches the stick, so there is no blade and no cleaning. Users often describe the draw as rounder at the start of a session than blade-based devices produce.

The similarities with HEATX are real — both use chamber-based heating rather than inserting a blade or an internal element — and the difference is in what the chamber is optimised for.

Ploom's chamber is built around a single well-tuned session. HEATX's chamber is built around a full-circumference heat path, which is what enables the second session. Ploom pairs with the EVO family; HEATX pairs with the TEREA-compatible family, which matters for buyers in markets where TEREA availability is better.

If your priority is the simplest possible chamber device inside a single well-supported ecosystem, Ploom is excellent. If your priority is extracting more from each stick, the geometry matters more.

HEATX Versus Glo: The Blade Question

Glo is often the entry point into the category because of aggressive device pricing and a mature Neo flavour range, and for lowering the barrier to trying heat-not-burn it does its job well.

It is also the only platform in this comparison that still inserts a metal blade into the tobacco, and that produces two ongoing costs. The blade accumulates residue, so the device needs cleaning; and residue first damages flavour, which means users notice performance declining before they notice the device is dirty. Repeated insertion plus cleaning cycles eventually wears the blade itself, and blade life is rarely published.

The practical comparison is not blade versus chamber as a matter of taste — it is maintenance you will actually do versus maintenance you will skip. A device that requires a routine nobody keeps is a device that ends up in a drawer.

For Retailers

A shelf stocked with a single platform is a shelf that depends on that platform's decisions. A shelf with two compatible options gives customers a reason to ask questions, and the answers are usually the same ones that decide the sale: how many sessions per stick, does it need cleaning, does it fit a pocket, and what does a year cost.

Those are answerable questions, and they favour hardware that is designed around them rather than around a feature list.

The Bottom Line

Every platform in this comparison heats tobacco properly. The differences that matter commercially and personally are narrower than the marketing suggests: whether the device touches the tobacco with a blade, whether a stick can be used twice, whether it is one object or two, and whether the user can control how it heats.

On those four questions, the HEATX range competes directly with the category's best. On flavour breadth and ecosystem depth, the majors remain ahead — and buyers who need those should choose accordingly.
