IQOS ILUMA Compatible Device: HEATX GEN2.0 and What Changes When You Leave the Proprietary System

HEATX Lab2026-10-236 min read

There is a question that keeps showing up in our support inbox, and it usually arrives the same way. Someone writes in to ask whether the HEATX GEN2.0 is a fake IQOS. Or whether it works with their TEREA sticks. Or whether it is somehow a knock-off that heats the same tobacco cheaper.

I get why the question exists. The ILUMA runs on TEREA sticks, TEREA sticks are widely available, and there is an obvious suspicion that a device at a fraction of the price might just be a cheaper way into the same tobacco. That is a fair thing to want, so let me deal with it head on before anything else.

The GEN2.0 is not a fake IQOS and it is not a disguised ILUMA. It is a separate heated tobacco device that happens to accept the same physical format of stick. The tobacco in the stick is the tobacco in the stick. What changes is the machine around it, and that difference is worth about ten minutes of your attention because it is not a small one.

Everything on our own figures below comes from the GEN2.0 specification sheet. Figures attributed to Philip Morris come from their published specifications. I have not measured the ILUMA's internals and I am not going to pretend otherwise.

What "ILUMA compatible" actually means

Worth stating plainly, because marketing language gets sloppy here. The GEN2.0 accepts ILUMA format sticks. It does not accept HEETS sticks, which is the older, shorter format used in the IQOS 3 DUO. Those are different physical formats with different dimensions and different heating expectations. If you have a pack of HEETS in your pocket right now, this device is not for you.

For TEREA and ILUMA format sticks, the fit is the point. The stick goes in, the 360 degree heating element wraps around it, and the heat reaches the tobacco from the outside in.

Here is the mechanism that matters. The GEN2.0 uses patented 360 degree circumferential heating. The heating element surrounds the full length of the stick rather than pushing a hot pin into one end of it. The manufacturer's claim is that this gives more consistent heating across the whole stick and better flavour stability, and even setting the marketing language aside, the logic holds up: heat arriving from every side is heat arriving more evenly than heat arriving from one direction.

There is a second, less advertised consequence of heating from the sides. Because the heat is delivered circumferentially, a stick that has already been used once can be heated a second time without you having to rotate it, pull it out, or re-seat it. The second pass just goes in and starts.

The two columns are closer on endurance than most people expect. 1800 mAh against 1728 mAh is not a meaningful difference, and 18 sticks against about 20 is not either. Whichever way you go here, you are charging roughly every day and a half.

The screen is the more visible gap. The ILUMA has a display, a connected app, Bluetooth, and firmware updates. The GEN2.0 has a display and no connectivity at all. The display itself is divided into three zones: battery percentage at the top, a live puff counter in the middle that shows the 16 and 13 segments separately, and a preheat indicator at the bottom. It lights up when you insert a stick and counts down the preheat. During heating you get a rotating ripple icon, while charging shows the Type-C symbol, and an abnormal state such as over-temperature protection gives you a warning icon. Below 20% battery you get a low battery reminder.

It is more information than some competitors show and none of the software. Whether that trade works for you depends entirely on whether you actually open the app.

One stick, two passes, 29 puffs

This is the part I would spend the most time on, because it is the part that changes your spending rather than your hardware.

The GEN2.0 gives you 16 puffs on the first pass through a stick and 13 on the second, 29 in total. The design intent, stated in our own documentation, is that one stick can be heated twice. You are not getting two sticks' worth of tobacco. You are getting a longer, more even session out of the single stick you bought, because the circumferential heating reaches material that a single-end heater would leave behind.

Practically, what happens is that a stick which would normally feel spent after one pass still has something left in it. You heat it again, get another 13 puffs, and the flavour stays consistent rather than turning thin and burnt.

I want to be careful about the economics of this claim, because "double the experience" is the kind of phrase that gets stretched until it breaks. Here is the honest version. If you were previously finishing a stick in one pass and throwing away a section you had not properly heated, this recovers that section. Your cost per usable puff goes down. It does not mean you consume twice the tobacco for the same money, and it does not mean the second session tastes identical to the first. It tastes more consistent than the tail end of a single pass would have, which is a different claim and the true one.

The design details that turn out to matter

Two things that were not on my list when I started paying attention.

First, the second pass needs no intervention. No rotation, no extraction, no pulling the stick out and pushing it back in at a different angle. You insert a used stick and it starts heating. On a device that depends on a heat path reaching all sides, that is harder than it sounds, and it removes a small piece of friction that I had not realised was friction until it was gone.

Second, there is nothing to clean. The GEN2.0 does not require a cleaning routine, and the design avoids the blackening and breakage problems that come with sticks being cooked from one end and handled repeatedly. Our documentation frames this as lower maintenance cost, which is accurate, and it also means you are less inclined to put off using the device because the last session left a mess.

The body is 92.5 mm long and 20.6 mm thick, so it goes into a pocket flat rather than at an angle. The manufacturer claims the 34.8 mm width is 17% narrower than the 42 mm average of traditional devices. It is the kind of figure I would normally treat with suspicion, so I checked it against the dimensions I could verify, and the 34.8 mm measurement is consistent with the spec sheet. The percentage is a comparison to a stated average rather than a measured one, and I would treat it as marketing until someone tests it against a defined sample.

The shell is food grade engineering plastic. The curve is meant to sit in the palm, which it does.

Where this is the wrong device

I would rather you skip this section than buy something that does not fit your life, so here it is without dressing it up.

If you rely on the IQOS app, this is not your device. There is no app, no Bluetooth, no firmware. The device you buy is the device you have in five years. Some people like that. If you have built any habit around tracking or notifications, you will notice the gap.

If you want the very highest consistency available and you are content to stay inside one brand's stick supply chain forever, the ILUMA is a well-made device and it is not close. Induction heating with a stick-specific thermal signature, plus firmware that can be tuned, is a more refined approach than ours. We are a resistive circumferential heater that works across a temperature range. Different design, and I will not pretend the other one is not more precise.

If you buy HEETS, the answer is simply no.

And one more, because it is the honest one. The GEN2.0 is 69 g against the ILUMA's 74 g. On weight the two are the same object. The reason the GEN2.0 looks smaller is the width, not the mass. Anyone telling you it weighs half as much is reading the dimensions and not the scale.

What to check before you buy

If your current setup is a working ILUMA that holds its charge and you like the app, switching is a downgrade in convenience. Not in outcome, but in convenience.

If your TEREA supply is easy to get where you live, and you are happy to keep replacing one proprietary device every few years, the ILUMA path is fine and simpler. You are buying into an ecosystem that is fully supported and will keep receiving updates.

If you are the person who keeps a second device in the car or the bag, or who wants a second device that costs less than a month of the first, this is a different product for a different job. The full specification and photos are on chillmistvape.com.

Health, law and where to buy

Heated tobacco is not harmless. Avoiding combustion reduces exposure to a number of the toxicants in cigarette smoke, but it does not remove nicotine, and nicotine is addictive. Nothing in this article is medical advice, and nothing here claims that either device is safe.

If you do not already use tobacco or nicotine, there is no reason to start. Check the age limits and the tax rules where you live, since both differ by country and change often. Buy from licensed sellers only. Figures attributed to Philip Morris and the IQOS ILUMA come from the manufacturer's published specifications; the GEN2.0 figures come from our own specification sheet. Compare them, then decide which one fits how you actually use a heated tobacco device.
